Celebrate Pro Bono Week and Join the Campaign For Justice

ABA Pro Bono Week is a national event that began two years ago to ensure broad awareness of the importance of pro bono legal services to help close the justice gap in this country. The entire month of October is Campaign For Justice Month, and Mental Health Advocacy Services is proud to be part of the statewide network of attorneys and other leaders who care about fairness and seek to ensure legal justice for all Californians.

In recognition of these important celebrations, MHAS was part of the organizing committee for this year’s SoCal Pro Bono Managers’ ABA Pro Bono Week MCLE event to be held on Wednesday, October 26, from 12 noon to 2 p.m.  at the Los Angeles County Bar Association offices in downtown Los Angeles.  SoCal Pro Bono Managers are honored to announce that Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of the University of California at Irvine Law School, will provide the keynote address for this event. From 1-2 p.m., a panel of distinguished judges will lead a one-hour elimination of bias MCLE training discussing issues around bias and the bench, with Dean Chemerinsky moderating. The cost for the training and buffet lunch is $20, and registration can be completed on-line by clicking here.

As part of its October recognition of ABA Pro Bono Week and the Campaign for Justice, MHAS conducted two additional MCLE events during October. MHAS reached out to the Los Angeles office of Arnold & Porter to provide a one-hour MCLE for the firm’s attorneys on October 6. In conjunction with the training, MHAS provided information about a pilot pro bono program for providing special education rights and advocacy training to low-income parents.  Attorneys from MHAS will also present an elimination of bias MCLE training for attorneys at its mid-Wilshire offices on Tuesday, October 25. This training provided by MHAS staff will address the elimination of bias topic by focusing on “Working Effectively with Challenging Clients.”  In its continuing efforts to maximize service to its clients, MHAS will also share information about its pro bono opportunities at this training.
